The Taiwan Trade Mission representative in Fiji, Jane Cheng, was in the Northern Division visiting a number of places on Thursday.

Ms Cheng said she was visiting the North because she wanted to strengthen the two countries’ relationship.

She last visited the North in September last year and was in Savusavu on Wednesday.

“I visited the tourism industry and other small businesses in Savusavu and noticed that most of these businesses do trade with Taiwan,” she said.

“Looking at these businesses doing trade with Taiwan, I was pleased; I know that the agreement and understanding is already there,” she said.

“I wish to help these businesses grow and especially the sugar industry in Labasa,” she said.

Ms Cheng said she was not only looking at businesses but was also keen to strengthen the cultural ties between Taiwan and Fiji.

“Back in 2005, Taiwan had a cultural agreement with a cultural group in Kadavu and since my last visit to the island early this year I am hoping to revive this agreement.”

Ms Cheng said medical specialists from Taiwan would be visiting the country and the specialists are for different fields.

She also urged those in the North to make use of scholarships offered by the Taiwan embassy.
