Geospatial technology is increasingly becoming an important discipline nationally and globally, says the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Mereseini Vuniwaqa.

Geospatial technology refers to equipment used in visualisation, measurement, and analysis of earth’s features.

Mrs Vuniwaqa made the comments during the first high level Fiji Geospatial Information Management Conference at the Grand Pacific Hotel, Suva, last Friday.

“It is now time for us to take a further step in our quest to put Fiji forward as a serious player in the geographical information systems industry,” Mrs Vuniwaqa said.

“The theme of today’s conference of ‘One Fiji, One Map’ and the sub theme ‘Integrated Geospatial Information for Sustainable Growth’ cannot be realised without us all working together as one team.”

She said the ability to digitally analyse data, indicated that land information in itself was important.

“Putting together other information whether it is under the earth, above or in the sea, gives a better understanding of our surroundings to enable sound decisions.”

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the change of name from Land Information to Geospatial Information could be identified with a location regardless of its positioning whether it is on top of the soil, beneath it, in the sea or above it.

“The Government supports activities for the benefit of the nation, and recognises the capabilities of geospatial information.”

She said the technology was a tool for better management, informed decision-making and planning to achieve socio- economic growth.
