The International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach will visit Fiji next year.

And with the Rio Olympic Games in 2016 the world’s focus will be on Fiji on May 1-2. Oceania National Olympic Committee regional media development specialist Matai Akauola confirmed Bach’s visit as he would be attending ONOC’s annual general assembly.

“It is confirmed the IOC president Thomas Bach will be in the country on May 1-2, 2015,” Akauola said.

He said the focus of the IOC global network would be on Fiji.

“Two hundred and four countries are members of the IOC and the IOC president will travel with a big entourage and will attract international media as well,” Akauola said.

“Other stakeholders such as the hosts of the 2016 Olympics, Winter Olympics and  National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will also be in Fiji.”

He confirmed there would be various workshops conducted for delegates leading up to the ONOC annual general assembly.

The last IOC president to visit Fiji was the late Juan Antonio Samaranch who attended the 20th annual general assembly held in Nadi on April 7, 2001.

Bach represented Germany in fencing at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal and won a gold medal in the team foil event.

Bach was elected to an eight-year term as IOC president at the 125th  IOC session in Buenos Aires on September 10, 2013. Bach will be eligible to run for one additional four-year term at the 133rd IOC session in 2021.
