The 10 villages in Kubulau District, in Bua have been given 20 beehive boxes each to help them improve their livelihood.

The Government has been giving beehive boxes around Vanua Levu through its Integrated Human Resources Development Programme (IHRDP) under the Commissioner Northern’s Office.

IHRDP divisional manager northern Aslam Khan said the 10 villages in Kubulau District were Kiobo, Navatu, Raviravi, Natokalau, Nasasaivua, Waisa, Namalata, Nadivakarua, Nakorovou and Kilaka.

“This venture will achieve our common goal of food security and bring about changes to the livelihood of the rural people,” Mr Khan said.

He said under this programme, villagers would utilise their land and increase their income generation.

“It is also a way of promoting honey production with the villagers being part of this milestone achievement.”

He said the price of honey had increased from $7 per kilogram to $9 per kg. This showed that there was potential for more honey production because there’s an increasing demand, both locally and abroad.

“It’s one way of helping villages. It is also a way of stopping migration from rural to urban areas,” he said.

He said families could use income from honey production to help educate their children.

Meanwhile, IHRDP had given out 760 beehive boxes to villages in Vanua Levu.
