Rent Defaulters Warned

All iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) tenants are reminded that rents in respect of leased land are to be paid on time as set out in their lease/tenancy agreements or leases could be terminated.

Many tenants in all divisions in Fiji have rent in arrears including the Northern Division.

Outgoing TLTB general manager Alipate Qetaki said those who did not pay their rent on time had breached their lease agreements.

Mr Qetaki said TLTB would do everything possible under existing laws to collect the arrears of rent from tenants wherever they were.

“TLTB will, as a last resort, take tenants to the Magistrates Court in its efforts to recover the arrears.

“TLTB will seek a court judgement for the arrears owed by the tenants including interests on arrears and court costs, he said.

“For difficult and delinquent tenants TLTB will seek an Eviction Order to evict the tenants and dismantle tenants’ dwelling houses as appropriate.

“For tenants who do not pay after the magistrate has ordered the payment, TLTB will seek the court’s discretion to imprison the tenant for a period of time for contempt of court,” Mr Qetaki said.
