The Athletics Fiji season launch was a success as children from special schools and secondary schools, including officials, turned up at the ANZ Stadium in Suva yesterday.

With the 2015 Pacific Games in Papua New Guinea, Fiji Secondary Schools Amateur Athletics Association general secretary Vuli Waqa said this programme would help them select athletes..

“This is the beginning of our season and it will go until next June and I hope the number of officials who turned up will continue to show up and maybe more in preparation for the upcoming Pacific Games,” Waqa said.

“This programme will give us an idea on identifying athletes who we feel can represent Fiji to the Pacific Games.

“It is just the beginning of the season and a lot of talent will be discovered as the months go on and a lot will be picked out from the Coca-Cola Games next year.

“We encourage a lot of people to come down for this programme, not only athletes, but officials as well, which is something that is always lacking whenever we have our competitions.”

St Joseph’s Secondary School sprint queen Sisilia Seavula said the programme made her realise the potential in athletics.

“This programme has really opened my eyes and I have now seen that athletics was a sport for everyone,” Seavula said.

“Seeing those children from special school’s made me realise that even though you are handicapped, athletics is still a sport you can take up. It is not limited to anyone.”

Seavula praised the initiative by Athletics Fiji for involving athletes of all ages to take part in the programme and to become great athletes.
