The new Waisomo Women’s Centre, in Kadavu is an incentive for its village’s women to work together with the Ministry of Women to create employment opportunities and alleviate poverty.

These were the words of Waisomo Women’s Club president, Varanisese Uluinaceva at the opening of the village’s new women’s centre on Thursday.

She said they were motivated by the Minister, Rosy Akbar, to aspire as agents of change in their communities.

“We are grateful to Ms Akbar for coming this far to visit us.”

Ms Uluinaceva said her visit showed that the Government was concerned about the women’s welfare.

“With this new centre and strengthened network with the ministry we are determined to alleviate poverty.”

Sixteen of the club’s women weave voivoi mats, baskets, handbags and a variety of handicrafts.

“Having a centre means we will be able to display all our products in one place and invite tourists to visit our village and buy these items, which will earn us some money.”
