Baivatu: Barter System Helps Revive Lau Economy

Inter-island vessel MV Liahona has is using barter system when it comes to trading in the Lau Group. This has been done to stimulate economic growth especially in uneconomical islands in Southern Lau.

Vessel owner Ulaiasi Baivatu said they decided to undertake this to help those in the islands who are finding it difficult to sell their artifacts and handicrafts.

“We are doing this to revive the economy for those in Southern Lau especially the non-economical islands of Kabara, Fulaga and Ogea,” he said.

“What we do is that we have a wholesale shop on board and for those who do not have money to buy their stock, we trade with them. People bring in their artifacts and we give them groceries to match the value of what they bring, Otherwise, we give them money.”

Mr Baivatu said they started trading after receiving complaints from the islanders that some of their artifacts brought to Suva are sold at a lower price or they are constantly being tricked by their agents. It also takes a lot of time to wait for their money to be sent back to them.

“They are happy about this. They tend to get their money on the spot or buy whatever they want and there is no long wait involved,” he said.

This business is quite ideal and works well for Mr Baivatu.

The 42-year-old businessman is an architect by profession and is a director of Clearview Architects, an architectural firm in Suva that designed the Bose Levu Vakaturaga Complex in Suva and the Garden City Complex in Raiwai. He also owns and operates Southern Island Traders in Samabula.
