The international experience of the majestic Port Denarau in Nadi has recorded an increasing number of super yachts over the last four years.

This year so far has recorded 52 super yachts visiting Denarau, which is the highest yet.

According to Port Denarau Marina chief executive officer Nigel Skeggs the number is going to increase extensively.

“At this point in time we have recorded 52 and we expect the number to increase before the year ends,” he said.

“Last year we recorded 40, and in 2012 was 40 as well and 36 in 2011.”

Mr Skeggs was part of the 2014 Yacht show in Monaco and is adamant that spreading the gospel of the local yachting industry should soon boost their arrival into the Fijian waters.

He pointed out the exchange would be of greater benefits to the Fijian economy.

“Each super yacht has an average spending of $280,000 during their duration of stay at the port, so this is an extensive benefit to the Fijian economy,” he added.

Mr Skeggs said, “only 18 super yachts can be accommodated at the marina at one single moment.”

He said there are plans to increase that to six more lay berth moorings.

“We are looking at improving berthing areas as there is a great need. At the same time it is quite costly and we have to see work with the designing as well,” he added.
