Vodafone Questions Digicel Pay Motive

Vodafone last night responded strongly to a statement by mobile rivals Digicel on a payment to the Vodafone 7s players after their win in Gold Coast.

Chief executive of locally-owned Vodafone Pardeep Lal said: “We have sought clarification from FRU and no one seems to be aware of any such payments made to the 7s players.

“We stand by our commitment to support and lift the profile of rugby and will continue to do so through our five years partnership.

“We had made it very clear from the beginning that we are here to uplift Rugby in all forms and not merely 7s.

“We will be exploring legal opinion on the matter as we view this as a cheap stunt to influence the view of the public and create confusion in the market which is not a surprise.”

Irish-owned Digicel – which lost the sevens sponsorship to Vodafone – earlier issued a statement saying:

“Digicel confirmed today that a strong desire to ensure players are recognised for their outstanding achievements and motivated to continue is behind the mobile company making a $20,000 ex gratia payment to members of the winning Fiji Sevens squad from the Gold Coast tournament.”
