Development at a young age is important especially involving children in major competitions to get them exposed to different levels, says a former champion athlete.

Central and Eastern Primary School Athletics co-ordinator Robin Dayal said their aim at this weekend’s Central Division Chow Games is on development as they gear up for next year’s Fiji Finals.

“Children at this level don’t get as much exposure when it comes to athletics as they should,” the Veiuto Primary School teacher said.

“We are so glad that most of the districts are taking part as well. We will be preparing for the Fiji Finals where everyone will be watching these young athletes. We need to expose them and give them that experience, especially to those athletes who cannot have or enter elite competitions at this level.”

The districts that will be taking part are Lami, Namosi, Nasinu, Namosi West, Northland, Suva 1, Suva 2, Tailevu North, Rotuma and Serua.

Dayal said the public can expect some good competition from rival districts and Rotuma who arrives in Suva today.

“We expect Suva 1 and Suva 2 to put on a spectacular performance and we are happy Rotuma has decided to join in as well. The Rotuman boys surprised us last year when they won the 100 metres and they are also Suva’s arch rivals so we are hoping to see some good competition because we know that Rotuma will want to take back more medals this year.”

Dayal said everything is going smoothly for the opening of the two-day event.

The Central Division Chow Games will be held at the ANZ National Stadium, Suva.
