Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer, Radrodro Tabualevu is not aware of the payment made by Digicel to the Vodafone Fiji 7s players.

The mobile company released a media statement on Tuesday claiming that it had released a payment of $20,000 as ex-gratia payment to the players who played at the Gold Coast 7s tournament last month.

“As the CEO I’m not aware of such a payment neither have received any payment. We would like to make it clear to the public that we have commercial agreements in place with sponsors and we respect such agreements,” Tabualevu said.

“We understand that this might be a ploy by Digicel to bring disrepute to FRU and its players and how it has been managing it business.”

Tabualevu has made it clear that neither FRU nor the players would accept any payment from Digicel as it completely disrespects the relationship between them and the current sponsors.

“The current sponsorship, led by Vodafone have been done in order to grow the sport of rugby in all forms, not only 7s. The sponsorship has enabled us to support the current 15s team on tour, the U18, Fijiana and provincial tournaments.

“We are extremely disappointed that Digicel had made this comment even without a discussion with the management of FRU. We strongly oppose such moves to disrupt the ongoing preparation of the 7s series and the road to Olympics,” Tabualevu said in a media statement.

He strongly believes these sort of tactics would further hamper the players’ preparations and take away efforts that they make in order to bring glory to the country.

“We are surprised that such an organisation of repute that operates globally will stoop down to such low tactics. We will discuss with our legal team and take appropriate action.”
