Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lived up to his rock-star reputation yesterday.

After the traditional welcome ceremony and formalities at Albert Park, Suva, Mr Modi asked if he could meet with the big crowd that came to catch a glimpse of him.

Sensing his intention, people jostled to get close and shake his hands, despite the tight security.

Some primary school students managed to grab him for a few ‘selfies’ which he posed for.

Mr Modi and his entourage arrived at Albert Park in their bullet proof BMW vehicles to a raucous welcome. Loud cheers, whistles and claps rang out across the ground.

A loud chorus of Modi! Modi! echoed across the park.

Young and old, women, men, children, mothers pushing their children in strollers all came out in numbers to greet the man who is set to change the face of world diplomacy.

Despite running behind schedule, Mr Modi made a complete round of the ground and greeted fans with a namaste or a handshake.

A few lucky students engaged Mr Modi in a conversation.

Mr Modi delighted the crowd when he took his first bowl of yaqona, clapped. It appeared he could do no wrong. When he accepted the traditional tabua, he handled it correctly and was greeted with enthusiastic applause.

Mr Modi and his delegation had earlier arrived at Nausori International Airport at 6am. He was met by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama and members of his Government. Mr Modi then inspected a military guard of honour before being whisked to Suva. School children lined the Nausori-Suva highway and waved flags as the official motorcade drove past

Mr Modi and his team left the country last night after a full schedule which included addressing Parliament, holding a mini Summit with Pacific Island leaders and delivering a speech at the Fiji National University.
