The University of the South Pacific Sevens organisers are using this Saturday’s competition as a build-up to their major tournament in January, next year

Tournament coordinator Apenisa Vodo said from their mini tournaments they are providing an opportunity for players to continue playing.

“Our first USP 7s tournament was held last month and we had 12 teams participating and now with our second tournament we are expecting 16 teams, so it is growing,” Vodo said.

“A lot of players are not playing since the 15s season is over but this tournament will give them more game time, plus sevens is a popular sport so that is another reason why we are having this.”

Vodo said they are now looking for  sponsorship.

“This will be our second tournament and the prize money has gone up to $1000 and we have been able to get the money from our club, for only 16 teams to compete in this one-day tournament. We are building up to our major tournament where we will invite 32 teams to compete, so having this mini tournaments is a good way to gauge our preparation for the main event in January.”

The teams confirmed to play for this weekend are 2014 Fiji Coral Coast Sevens winners Police, Covenant Brothers, Uluinakau and Fire.

There is still room for teams to participate and they will only need to pay their entry fee of $150 as soon as possible.
