More than $30,000 from funds raised during the Naitasiri tradeshow held in Nausori last week will go to the province scholarship fund.

Naitasiri Provincial Council’s newly appointed chairman, Alivereti Nabulivou said they raised $67,000 in total.

“The money that is being diverted to the scholarship fund was raised by the province’s women’s association, this has been their project since 2001. It is the first time they have raised much more than their target which is normally $20,000,” Mr Nabulivou said.

He said the funds help senior students at their provincial high school and those at tertiary level.

“The remaining funds will go towards the administration and running of the provincial council’s office and salary of its staff,” Mr Nabulivou said.

He said the turnout and support in this year’s show was overwhelming.

“The biggest crowd came out this year and we are really happy about the support shown from all 16 districts. It’s very encouraging to see that,” Mr Nabulivou said.

Meanwhile, one of their main aims now is to encourage the people of Naitasiri to use the natural resources available to them.

“We have a lot of land in the province which lies idle and it would be good to start utilising them.

“Although we will need a lot of assistance in getting the machinery and soil fertilisers in order for this to actually take place,” Mr Nabulivou said.
