A single mother could not contain her emotions as her third child was announced dux of St Agnes Primary School during the school’s prizegiving yesterday.

Alanieta Nasilivata had been looking after her four children alone since her husband, Peniasi Nasilivata, died of kidney failure in 2012.

Her son, Livai Nasilivata was yesterday announced the dux of the school scoring the highest marks in Maths, Basic Science and Health Science subjects.

Mrs Nasilivata said she only wished her husband was around to see their son graduate with good grades.

“Today is an emotional and also a happy day for me. I have been a single mother since my husband died and I have always worked hard to send my children to school,” Mrs Nasilivata said.

“I definitely wish his dad was here and that would even be a greater feeling altogether.”

She said her son’s achievement had paid off the sacrifices she had been doing for her children in the last two years.

Meanwhile, Livai said he was surprised to be named the school’s dux.

“I was shocked to hear my name called out but I know I deserve it because I have been working towards getting this before I leave for secondary school,” Livai said.

“It has always been my father’s dream for me to become the dux and today he is not here but I am thankful to my mother for looking after me and enabling me to strive for one of my dad’s dreams for me.”

The Nairukuruku, Naitasiri boy dedicated his achievement to his mother and late father.

Close to a hundred Year Eight students graduated from the Nabua, Suva school yesterday.
