Akash Mohini’s struggle as a single parenting paid off last Friday when her daughter Ashna Narayan scooped the dux prize of Saraswati College in Waila, Nausori.

The 39-year-old said it had been a hard journey since the death of her husband, Deo Narayan, in 2003.

“Life had to go on for my family and especially my two children so with whatever I earned and the support I received from relatives we had to make do,” Ms Mohini said.

The librarian said she felt proud of her daughter’s achievement.

“I’m so happy that my daughter and her brother could move on and achieve good things despite the absence of their dad. I feel blessed,” she said.

Ashna, 18, said the struggle they went through as a family was something that motivated her to achieve.

“I saw that my mother always tried to provide me with whatever I wanted or needed despite the situation we were in so I really wanted to work hard and make her proud,” she said.

Ashna plans to join the FNU’s College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences and take up Bachelor of Medicine Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) studies next year.
