Molly O’Connor, 75, plans to invest her compensation payout for her eight grandchildren.

Ms O’Connor was among 50 retired women  civil servants who were handed compensation cheques by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama last Friday in Suva.

The cheques were part of Government’s promise in the 2014 Budget.

“There’s no need for me to keep this money for myself. I’d like to give them to my grandchildren to be invested in their education,” Ms O’Connor said.

She had worked as a nurse from 1964 to 1994.

“I’m grateful that we’ve been compensated, justice has prevailed,” Ms O’Connor said.

She said they worked under difficult conditions during their time compared to their successors nowadays. We rode on horsebacks. We crossed rivers, we trekked, it was hard but it was the best way to learn the job.

“On reflection, it was difficult but enjoyable. Our strength was built on what we faced,” she said.
