The Fiji Pearls were pleasantly surprised over the weekend when former Silver Ferns and former Fiji netball captain/coach Vilimaina Davu visited them during training.

Fiji Pearls squad members Maria Lutua and Mere Rabuka were inspired by Davu.

“It was great getting to meet her,” Lutua said.

“She’s such an idol for me and for many of the girls. No doubt it was really huge getting to meet her, especially as an iconic Fijian netball player and being a former Silver Fern.

“She’s accomplished so much in her career. Being the first netball player to be inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame, she is such an inspiration. I for one I am inspired by her achievement.”

Rabuka echoed similar sentiments, saying it was most helpful for them to get more insight on how the Silver Ferns work, especially coming from Davu.

“It was an honour to have an idol like Davu giving us a lot of useful tips about the Silver Ferns. What to expect from them during the test, what is expected of us as players and the importance of commitment and sacrifice.”

On the impending Oceania Tri-Series next January, Lutua shared her excitement at the prospect of taking on the Silver Ferns.

“I’m very excited about it and we’re incredibly honoured to be hosting the Silver Ferns here at home. This doesn’t happen very often, so we’re excited and looking forward to it.”

Rabuka said there was much at stake for everyone. They know no one was guaranteed a spot and it all came down to impressing head coach Kate Carpenter.

“Everyone is fighting for a spot because we all know no one is guaranteed a place on the team.

“It doesn’t matter whether you’re experience or you’re the star player. It’s all a matter of impressing Kate.

“This was something Vilimaina also told us about. Don’t expect to be handed anything or think you’re owed your place on the team. Work hard for it and earn it. Also conduct off the court is just as important to determining your place as your behaviour on the court.”

Davu is in the country after being inducted into the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame last Friday alongside former sprint king Jone Delai.
