Government has allocated $3.1 million in its national budget for the acquisition of another new vessel next year.  Attorney General and Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed- Khaiyum made the announcement in Suva last week.

The funding, according to Mr Sayed-Khaiyum is to improve transportation to the maritime region. In addition, $2.4million is given towards increasing the frequency of services to remote and uneconomical shipping routes through the Government Shipping Franchise.

Last year, Government also revamped its shipping fleet to improve accessibility to remote islands and facilitate more trade and development in the maritime region.

Apart from upgrading of the Government shipping vessels to an acceptable operating standard, $9 million was provided for two new vessels to service remote maritime communities and to assist in supplying materials and machineries for development works on these islands.

In addition, $7 million was allocated for a new landing craft to transport both cargo and passengers to outer islands.

This year, the focus is more on upgrading. $800,000 has been given for the upgrading of the existing Government Shipping Vessels; $850,000 is given to upgrade the Government Wharf and $800,000 is for the dredging of the Government Wharf Entrance.

The Government will also be giving $120,000 for the upgrading of the Government Shipping Services Building in Walu Bay and $200,000 has also been budgeted for the installation of Beacon Piles for Navigational Aid.
