Thurston Gardens one of Suva’s popular landmarks will soon join other botanic gardens of excellence in the world.

A master plan for its restoration and redevelopment was launched yesterday by the President, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, at the adjacent  Fiji Museum.

Ratu Epeli said the plan was an opportunity to recreate that special place where one could reconnect with nature.

“With a mission to conserve, discover and share knowledge about plants and their environment in order to preserve and enrich life, the gardens will fulfill an important role in our society,” Ratu Epeli said.

The plan will see the introduction of several key features – the creation of a new collection of native and endemic plants, thematic collections of plants, improved landscaping, a focus on the historical significance of the place, improved recreational amenities and solving the problems of drainage which are shared in common with the presidential compound next door and Albert Park.

Meanwhile, National Trust of Fiji Director, Elizabeth Erasito said a dedicated group representing key stakeholders was working on the draft master plan since March.

“With funding support from German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GIZ) and the Global Environment Facility Forest Conservation and Protected Area Management Project in Fiji,” Ms Erasito said.

The plan is designed by Landscape Architect, Elsa Miller.

“The master plan will be on display for a week at the Fiji Museum verandah during which public scrutiny and input will be welcomed.

“All suggestions will be taken into account in finalising the draft master plan which will then be considered by the government,” Ms Erasito said.
