Two families in the Western Division are homeless after a fire destroyed their home on Tuesday night.

In the first incident, a family in Navo, Nadi, escaped unharmed but lost their nine-bedroom home.

It is believed that the fire started from the kitchen at around 8.45pm caused by an electrical fault.
Ram Singh, 86, said he was drinking kava with a relative when his granddaughter raised the alarm.

“My granddaughter was watching TV and suddenly she started shouting fire as smoke filled the house,” Mr Singh said.
Neighbours also gathered to help put out the fire but their attempts were overwhelmed by the heat and flames.

“I’m very thankful to my neighbours because I got trapped inside the house filled with smoke and suddenly I felt someone picking me up and carried me outside.”

The estimated cost of damage is at around $100,000.

In the second incident, a 66-year old farmer of Varadoli, Ba, lost his four-bedroom house. Damage is estimated at $30,000.
The incident happened at around 11.45 pm on Tuesday night.

The fire is believed to have started from the sitting room ceiling.

“Once again we are pleading with members of the public to be cautious of fire hazards in their homes, said Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro.

She believes that switching off appliances that are not in use can potentially save your property.

“It takes minutes to literally see everything you’ve worked hard for go up in flames, which is why conducting a thorough check is of paramount importance.”
