The Fiji National Sports Commission has given Basketball Fiji $225,000 to run the 2014 FIBA-USP U19 Oceania Basketball Championship starting next Monday.

Commission chairman Peter Mazey said they are heading in the right direction together with the Government through the Prime Minister’s Office in making sure they host a successful tournament.

“I think everybody is very aware the Commission and Government’s direction is very much to hosting more international tournaments in Fiji, instead of us travelling overseas,” Mazey said.

The tournament is perhaps one of the biggest tournaments in the region.

Meanwhile, Basketball Fiji president, Major-General Ioane Naivalurua, says with the Government’s policy on sports diplomacy, he is glad that basketball is a platform in pushing forward that policy.

The Oceania Basketball Championships starts on Monday with the opening ceremony at 11am.
