A family is homeless after their top flat in Raiwaqa, Suva, was destroyed in a fire yesterday morning.
The National Fire Authority, at 8am yesterday, received a call that a property was on fire at Bryce Street, Raiwaqa.

Two teams were deployed, one from the Suva Fire Station and the other from the Valelevu Fire Station.
NFA chief executive officer John O’Connor said they received a call in the morning and deployed all their resources keeping in the mind the risk exposures in the area as they knew it was barrack housing.

“The home was mostly of ply board and wood structure so the fire spread quickly,” Mr O’Connor said.
“We were able to stop the fire from spreading and destroying the top floor of the second flat, and also prevented the fire from spreading to the ground floor of the two flats.”

Mr O’Connor said there were no casualities.
The owner of the flat could not comment because she was still reeling in shock.

Meanwhile, the NFA reiterates that people needed to take special care when dealing with fire at home.

“It is very important for home owners to take fire safety seriously and to ensure that their family members are aware of the dangers of a fire,” Mr O’Connor said.

Investigation continues to determine the cause of the fire and the cost of damage.
