Pay $2000 By December 31, Patel Ordered

Mahendra Motibhai Patel has been ordered by the High Court in Suva to pay his bail bond of $2000 by December 31 this year.
Patel was tried in absentia in a corruption case between the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption and former executives of Post Fiji Limited.

Patel who was the chairman was charged for abuse of office.

FICAC lawyer Rashmi Aslam had submitted that his earlier recognition bond be confiscated after Patel violated the bail condition by not attending any of his mention, pre-trial or trial cases.

Justice Prabaharan Kumararatnam had forfeited the recognition bond and had ordered that Patel pay a personal bond of $2000 by the end of next month.

He said failing to do so, the bond would be converted into a fine.

Justice Kumararatnam said Patel would have to serve six months imprisonment in default of the payment, if the $2000 was not paid.

Patel had been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after he was convicted for abuse of office.
He had surreptitiously extended the contract of former managing director, Tevita Peni Mau.

Earlier this week Patel had told a newspaper in Australia, The Australian that he would not be returning to the country as he is there for medical treatment.

Patel, Mau and former general manager finance Dhirendra Pratap were imposed prison sentences. Mau got nine months, Pratap received six months.
