Prasad To Govt: Thanks

Biman Prasad was elected as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee yesterday, with the Government side offering their unconditional support.

The Government members, Whip Semi Koroilavesau, Balmindar Singh and Sanjit Patel had initially backed Aseri Radrodro, of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA). However, Mr Radrodro, a chartered accountant declined their nomination for chairmanship of the committee.

The matter was left to Secretary-General Viniana Namosimalua to rule on because no one seconded the motion by Mr Radrodro to nominate Mr Prasad, of the National Federation Party (NFP).

Citing parliamentary precedents and standing orders, and with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme experts present yesterday she declared the election of MrPrasad as valid.

Mr Prasad was quite happy to be receive the public support of the Government, expressed through Mr Koroilavesau, who had been critical of the chairman’s public commentary of the Auditor-General’s reports from 2007-2013.

The committee chose Balmindar Singh, a certified fraud examiner, to be deputy chairperson of the committee. Both sides sounded positive about the work that awaited them.

Mr Koroilavesau, expressing his support, said he could not guarantee an easy passage through Parliament of anything tabled by the Public Accounts Committee.

However, he said they were prepared to rise above partisan politics and ensure the smooth working of the Committee.
