Proposed North Tech College

Labasa Arya College is to be converted to a technical college next year.
This was revealed by the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Mahendra Reddy, during his northern tour on Wednesday.

“These technical colleges are introduced to students after Year 10. Students would choose to attend vocational colleges or further their academic classes,” Dr Reddy said.

He said both choices would be free and both options would guarantee students to further their tertiary studies to attain a diploma or degree in their course of interest.

Meanwhile, school principal Kamlesh Chand said the conversion of the school into a technical college would get positive results.

“The academic streams will be closed next year and the previous academic students would move on to further their studies in nearby schools,” Mr Chand said.

“It’s a time for change which would benefit the 59 students who already has been vocational students in the school.

“The choosing of the school was not a hard decision to make since vocational studies began in 1991 and the school is a well equipped site for a technical college,” he said.
