Good sense prevailed yesterday at the Public Accounts Committee meeting. A threat of a logjam was defused by suggestions from Aseri Radrodro of the Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA).

Government Whip Semi Koroilavesau had objected to chairman Biman Prasad’s recommendation that the committee start looking at Auditor-General’s reports from 2013 and then work their way back to 2010. Koroilavesau was backed by Government member Sanjit Patel, who asked for a vote on whether the committee should start with 2013 or 2010 reports.

However, Mr Prasad maintained starting with the 2013 reports would be beneficial because of the ‘public interest.’ Mr Prasad also argued that potential witnesses were still around in case they needed to appear before the committee to verify details in the reports.

At one point, Mr Koroilavesau raised his voice to emphasise a point. In response, to both sides, Mr Radrodro said momentum was more important.

“Let’s get the committee started, wherever we start from, “he said.

The committee is expected to meet next on December 15 after the 2015 National Budgetary responses in Parliament over the next two weeks.
