Harry Tivaknoa was happy to see a lot of people visiting and appreciating Rotuman art and craft at the Rotuman Art Exhibition at the Suva Civic Centre yesterday.

Originally from Rotuma but living in Suva, Mr Tivaknoa said he loved art.

“I have two shops by the name of Kapui Kreation at MHCC and Downtown Boulevard and we specialise in clothing and jewellery,” Mr Tivaknoa said.

He said Kapui was the name of a flower from his native Rotuma.

“The influence for my art is from my imagination because when I see something, I work around that imagination or idea.”

Mr Tivaknoa said they were impressed with more young artists joining in to exhibit their work.

“This exhibition is not just for us, but for local artists who do not have a place to showcase their hard work.”

He said they sold uniquely designed sulu (sarong) as wrap-around, suluvakataga (pocket sulu), shirts and a variety of earring, bracelets, necklaces and belts.

“The unique thing about Kapui is that the materials used are mainly discarded as rubbish like the coconut shell, coconut husk, bark of the coconut tree and other things.”

The exhibition ends today.
