Young girls were able to meet their local netball icons as the Fiji Pearls coach Kate Carpenter and the squad hosted a clinic in Lautoka, yesterday.

Carpenter said that the whole purpose of the clinic was for the team to interact with the community.

“The whole idea of the coaching clinic was for the young kids who are mostly in primary schools to interact with the girls and it is something the team has not done before because we are usually based in Suva,”she said.

“This is great for the profile of the sport and it is really exciting for the kids to work with their role models.”

Carpenter said there was a need to urge more girls to play netball.

“We basically want more girls to play netball and know the specific technique and more knowledge about the game which is also one of the reason we have conducted this clinic.”

The clinic was held in the morning and the Fiji Pearls played the Lautoka men’s team and the Western Heat in the afternoon.

Carpenter plans to name the team for the Oceania Tri-Series on January 3.
