Forty-eight nurses graduated from an Open Foot Care Nurses Training at Studio 6, in Suva last Saturday.

“I have been a nurse for seventeen years and we want people to heed our advice and take good care of their health to avoid diabetes and other health problems,” Meredani Mocetu, one of the nurses said. She works at the Vunidawa Hospital in Naitasiri.

“It is very important to take care of your diet, exercise well and have regular check-up.”

The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate, said nurses played an important role and as agents of change in preventing diabetes and diabetic foot-related complications.

“The complication of diabetes has increased over the years and the amputation rate in Fiji is one in every 12.5 hours,” Mr Usamate said.

He said one of the many Government strategies in reducing the rate of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) was increasing the tax on sugar- sweetened beverages.

This, Mr Usamate said, was apart from ensuring NCD medications were always available and pharmacy opening hours were extended.

“The creation of Diabetes Community Peer Groups has shown to be an effective and successful tool for communities to be empowered.”

He commended the Foot Care Nurses training which could help highlight that prevention of amputation through early detection of abnormalities.

“We need to educate and empower people living with diabetes to take a more proactive approach to health and wellness,” he said.

To date, 84 nurses have undergone Foot Care Training.

Number of nurses trained:
– Central Division: 61
– Northern Division: 10
– Eastern Division: 13
