It was a proud moment for Konai Thaman as her husband, Professor Randy Thaman, was awarded the University of the South Pacific’s Vice-Chancellor’s Research Impact award.

He is well known in Fiji as Randy Thaman.

The award recognises the impacts of a person’s research in the various Pacific countries and societies.

Professor Thaman is a senior lecturer in geography at the university.

He was among the many university staff who were rewarded for their research.  The awards were presented last Friday at the university’s Japan ICT Theatre.

Mrs Thaman said she could only wish her husband was in the country to receive the award that he had worked hard for.

Professor Thaman is attending an agro-forestry symposium in Wallis and Futuna.

“He’s happy about it. We came here 40 years ago and he has had so many research projects all around the Pacific helping with the environmental plan. His main interest is ethanol biodiversity which is really about conservation, about our diversity in the islands,” Mrs Thaman said.

“We have always helped each other and I am very privileged to be here and receive this award on his behalf. He is very, very happy and of course I wish he could be here to receive the award himself.”

Meanwhile, Ronit Singh who won the Vice- Chancellor’s Best Research Student Prize conveyed his excitement over the award through a family member. He is now living in United States.

His research was titled “Blade design and performance testing of a small wind rotor for low wind speed applications.”
