Widows in Fiji have been assured of formal training to help them earn a living on their own or start a business.

The Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Rosy Akbar, said this in Lautoka last Saturday.

She was launching the Lifebread cafeteria, its office, international director’s residence and the Dolphin Swimming Pool at Teidamu in Lautoka.

The institution, a home for widows, has a multipurpose training centre to empower widows in Fiji to be absorbed into the employment sector or start one’s own businesses.

“My ministry will work together with the Lifebread – Stay Connected Foundation (LSCF) to provide the training and we will also invite volunteers to conduct training seminars and workshops for the participants,” Ms Akbar said.

“The Fijian Government will ensure that women are treated fairly and equally in a better Fiji.”

She said the project would help widows who were neglected, provide them with care and equip them to better their livelihoods.

“The LSCF has taken the initiative to begin a programme that will primarily focus on assisting widows through training and empowerment programmes to enable them to become productive members of our society.”

She believes that this will also help build the widows’ self-esteem and increase their confidence.
