The ministry is pleading with everyone to get tested to reduce the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS.

People not coming forward for testing were a contributing factor to the increasing number of HIV/AIDS cases in Fiji.

Ministry of Health’ and Medical Services’ national advisor for family health, Dr Rachel Devi said this.

“Basically one of the messages that we want to get across is to get tested because without you getting tested you will basically not know your status as a person,” Dr Devi said.

“This is important for the World Aids Day programme because for example if a person does not know their HIV status and still goes around sleeping with other people or their partners, there are possibilities of transmission but when they know they will still be able to have sex, but protected sex.”

32 cases reported so far this year

As of September this year the ministry has received a total of 578 HIV/AIDS cases of which 32 were reported cases for this year.

She said this was likely to increase by the end of the year.

“Last year we had a total of 64 cases but this year we are currently at 32. We have increased testing across the country. In every single sub-division hospital we encourage doctors and nurses to do so if they think they need to,” she said.

Dr Devi also confirmed that the statistics showed men and women were equally contracting HIV/AIDS.

“Honestly, zero infection cases for Fiji, we are not close, we are very far away.

“The majority of the cases is from the Central Division, but I must say that the Western and the Northern are coming up as well. The West is coming up quite significantly,” Dr Devi said.
