The endless support she received from her three children was what kept HIV/AIDS positive Margaret Seduadua living for the 14th year now.

Mrs Seduadua contracted the virus from her husband during her pregnancy with her third child 14 years ago.

She said since then her family had been very supportive towards her despite the stigma attached to the disease.

“I was pregnant and had been attending an ante-natal clinic at CWM Hospital when I went through some tests including HIV. After two weeks, I went to collect my test results when the doctor informed me that the other tests were negative except for HIV,” Mrs Seduadua said.

“I was shocked, I didn’t know what to do, whether to cry, scream or commit suicide. My biggest worry was my children. Who was going to look after them in my absence? But the support from my family and friends helped me through those dark days.”

She said doctors also told her then she had only three to five more years to live, however, she had now been living with the virus for 14 years.

“I went through prevention of mother to child transmission in trying to prevent my child from being infected. My son is in Year Seven now. He is healthy and free from HIV.

“Now, I decide to speak out in public because it’s very hard to go through these experiences as we, HIV positive people, are not affected alone, it touches our families and societies as well,” she said.

Mrs Seduadua, now a HIV advocate for the Ministry of Health, said as a positive mother, people should not differentiate them from others.

“I would like to remind you that people living with HIV are just like you and me. We are part of the solution and not the problem. We need your love, care and support in order for us to be part of the community,” she said.
