The BLK Fiji women’s basketball team started their campaign in the 2014 FIBA-USP Oceania Under-19 Basketball Championships with a win over Samoa yesterday.

The Dale Sauqaqa-coached side didn’t disappoint a very vocal home crowd after clinching a 65-41 victory in their first match of the tournament.

Sauqaqa said they were grateful for the outcome.

“They performed well and the game went the way we had expected it to happen so we’re grateful for the result of that game and really pleased to get a win.

“It took the girls awhile to settle down but once they got to working their nerves out everything fell into place,” she said.

“If they continue with that kind of play from the third and fourth quarter they can get similar results in the next games.

“We are not going to underestimate anyone. We’ll continue to take the same approach as the week continues.”

The Tiana Kainamoli-skippered side maintained the lead from the start of the match, scoring 16-12, 31-23, 41-52 and 65-41.

In the other women’s games, Australia displayed their dominance thrashing American Samoa with whopping 113-8 with Guam winning the following match against Papua New Guinea 90-46.

Afterward, New Zealand went on to thrash Solomon Islands with 108-21.

Meanwhile in the men’s competition, BLK Fiji weren’t quite as lucky as their female counterparts, going down after in a tough first game against American Samoa 61-47.

Guam dominated the Solomon Islands 88-13, New Zealand thrashed Tahiti 126-27 and Australia rounded up the competition for the first day with a 112-38 win over New Caledonia.
