Did you know that every 2.5 seconds someone needs blood in Fiji?  Only five per cent of our population donate blood. These are facts confirmed by the Fiji National Blood Services (FNBS).

The demand for blood at all hospitals increases during the festive period and FNBS is tasked with ensuring there is adequate stocks available at all times.  As such they have launched an appeal to the public and business houses.

Bank South Pacific in responding to this request is holding a blood drive at three of its Suva branches tomorrow, December 5, 2014.  The facilities will be available to receive both staff and public donors.

The bank’s country manager, Kevin McCarthy, reiterated their pro-life position and continued efforts to improve lives.

These blood drives are one part of this campaign.

“We hope this initiative will help address the high demand and save lives during the festive season,’’ said Mr McCarthy.

“Christmas is the season of goodwill and we invite the general public especially our valued customers to join us tomorrow in this blood drive,’’ he said.

The Fiji National Blood Services states that there is no substitute for blood and that there are also thousands of people who need blood in hospitals.

They also confirmed that the Blood Bank at CWM Hospital usually administers 50 pints of blood per day to patients.

The FNBS blood bus will be parked at the following BSP branch locations this Friday:

– 9am -12pm: Pacific House branch (opposite Merchants Club)

– 12.10pm – 2pm: Suva Central Branch loading bay (opposite Garrick Club)

– 2.10pm – 4pm: Thomson Branch loading bay (opposite MHCC)

“At BSP, we encourage staff to make their contribution to community development so we are bringing the blood bank closer to our offices.

This should make it is easier to donate blood,” confirmed Mr McCarthy.
