Mahogany Trust To Formulate Strategic Plan

The Fiji Mahogany Trust will be working on a strategic model that will ensure the equal participation of landowners with the rest of the mahogany industry stakeholders.

Trust chairman, Joeli Baledrokadroka, said for long time now landowners had been kept away from having what he called a ‘share of the cake’.

But this time around, he anticipates things would take a turn for the better.

The model is anticipated to address ongoing landowners’ concerns like lease monies, for instance. Currently landowners receive $10 per hectare harvested which Mr Baledrokadroka said was not enough.

These were highlighted in discussions during the second of the trust’s annual meeting at the Vale ni Bose complex in Nasese yesterday.

Mr Baledrokadroka said: “This plan would be put forward through the Mahogany Industry Council to bring us onboard and ensuring that Fiji Hardwood works hand in hand with the council.

“Our goal and the challenge are to relocate ourselves financially and tactically.

“We are in a position to ask the Government, through the Mahogany Industry Council, that we have a model that can work better for landowners and for the industry.”

He said additionally they would like to take advantage of the $10 million funding by the Fiji Hardwood Corporation Limited given out to contractors every year.

“The purpose of this meeting is ensuring that everyone brings in all their ideas and we put in a model for next year and the years to come for stations where mahogany has not been harvested.

“Currently only three of the 14 stations, Naboutini, Galoa and Nukurua had been harvested,” he said.

There are eight stations in Viti Levu and six in Vanua Levu. Harvesting in Vanua Levu is expected to begin in 2017.
