Residents of Malake can have clean drinking water sourced from a tap from next year.

The $248,000 upgrade is expected to be made available early next year.

Provisional Administrator Ra, Kelepi Kubunameca, said he was privileged to be a part of history.

“This is like a prayer answered by their ancestors as far as the villagers are concerned. I am honoured to be part of this historic event of having access to water and electricity,” Mr Kubunameca said.

Matelita Nauga, 32, was beaming with delight when she saw this development taking place before her.

“This is like my childhood prayer being answered. Since we were kids we have been drinking rain water,” Ms Nauga said.

“Because the water in the well could not cater for all of us we went to the extent of collecting rain water.”

Ms Nauga said the biggest challenge they faced was the supply of water, especially during the festive season.

“When it’s nearly Christmas it would be really busy for us, especially the women, since we would be doing a lot of cooking. Without the water being supplied to us we would really struggle,” she said.

Ms Nauga said the dry spell that affected the counrty was the most challenging period.

“This year would have to be the hardest for us in the village. We were badly affected. The only water supply we had was at the mainland,” she said.

Funded by the Government of Fiji the project will be able to cater for an average of 140 households.
