The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, had a meeting in Jerusalem with the Israeli Foreign Minister, Avigdor Lieberman, as he continued with his Middle East tour.

They agreed to strengthen existing bilateral ties in various areas and discussed new areas of cooperation between Israel and Fiji.

The meeting came after the Prime Minister visited Fijian troops serving with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights separating Israel and Syria.

Before leaving for Jerusalem, the Prime Minister had a talanoa session over yaqona with the soldiers at the Golan Heights at Camp Ziouani, Israel.

He listened to their concerns which, he said would be addressed

Mr Bainimarama reminded them to be united all the time, as what they had fought for was now part of the Government’s roadmap.

Last October Cabinet approved a memorandum of understanding on agricultural technical cooperation between Fiji through the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and the Government of Israel.

This was through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Agency for International Development Cooperation (MASHAV).

The MOU provides a framework for deepening, expanding and preserving bilateral development cooperation between Fiji and Israel and further strengthen the existing spirit of friendly relations between the two countries.

Cabinet based its decision on a submission by the Minister for Agriculture, Inia Seruiratu.

The MOU would be valid for five years and would be renewed automatically for successive periods of equal duration.
