The Labasa Cane Producers Association (LCPA) handed over a $694,260 cheque to the Fiji Sugar Coporation (FSC), Labasa Mill management yesterday.

The donated fund is part of the association’s Fairtrade Development Plan 2014, says the association’s executive manager, Abinesh Chand.

“It is in partnership with other projects like cane planting and distributing approved chemicals to the farmers,” Mr Chand said.

The funds would then be distributed by FSC later to Labasa sugarcane farmers, he said.

“Sugarcane farmers in Labasa will receive their payment on December 12 as their first payment and the second payment in April next year,” Mr Chand said.

He said the association has been providing assistance to Labasa cane farmers for the last five years and they have noticed the increase in cane productivity.

“Till date, the LCPA has received $13.7 million in terms of Fair Trade Premium which is paid to members of the LCPA to improve their economic, social and environmental conditions,” Mr Chand said.

“We are thankful to the European Union, the Fair Trade Coordination Unit, FSC and supporting partners for a successful year.”

“Not forgetting the Government’s support, United Kingdom (UK) sugar consumers and the farmers for their hard work.”
