Gender Equality Important: Dr Rafai

Fiji’s constitution recognises the importance of equality and gender equality has been the foundation of developments.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services’ deputy secretary of public health, Dr Eric Rafai, made the comment at the opening of a gender and social inclusion workshop on Wednesday.

“The ministry, through the Fiji Health Sector Support in 2012, conducted a comprehensive review and developed a report on gender equality and social inclusion strategy.”

He said the report had highlighted the many recommendations that were necessary for the ministry to undertake.

“As a result of the review and recommendations we have developed a gender training manual for the ministry.”

“While the health needs of both men and women are crucial, gender issues are real and important for good governance.”

He said gender equality was important for the achievement of sustainable management and development of the heath sector.

Dr Rafai said they also recognised gender as one of the factors influencing roles, responsibilities, status and influence in society.
