The Government yesterday again pledged to stick to its promises of creating more jobs and continuing to cut corruption. Both Labour Minister Joji Konrote and Infrastructure Minister Pio Tikoduadua stressed plans to bring about positive changes during their tenure in office.

Mr Konrote was asked in Parliament about measures by the Government aimed at reducing unemployement. He said that his ministry was committed to the reduction of unemployment to 5 per cent from 7 per cent by next year. Mr Konrote said the National Employment Centre was one of their main agents for reducing unemployment.

Mr Konrote also stressed that the creation of the Foreign Employment Services Department within the ministry was also part of their comprehensive strategy.

The department is coordinating the seasonal worker scheme  with New Zealand.

“Government is committed to finding work for all Fijians, “ said Mr Konrote.

The New Zealand Government will allow Fijians to work again in New Zealand after the scheme’s suspension after 2006.

Mr Tikoduadua admitted the negative public perception of the Land Transport Authority. However, he stressed that zero-tolerance of all forms of corruption, especially within LTA was the way forward.

“We are coming after you, “ he warned corrupt officers during his budgetary response in Parliament.

His ministry plans to work with the Fiji Police Force to weed out corrupt elements within the LTA.

He elaborated on Government’s comprehensive investment structure in infrastructure, the largest in Fiji’s history.  The allocation had been questioned by the Opposition.tiny from the Opposition.
