The hope of having a New Year’s Eve street party in Nadi hangs in the balance after business houses, taxi drivers and bus operators raised their objections.

The objections came after organisers Events Fiji had proposed the closure of Market Road in Nadi to host the event.

Nadi Town Council special administrator Robin Ali confirmed the objections.

“Objections have been brought forward regarding the street party stating reasons such as traffic congestion and loss of business,” Mr Ali said.

However, Mr Ali said the council has given the organisers venue options to host the party.

“We have given the organisers an option to host the New Years Eve party at Koroivolu Park in Nadi rather than on the street.”

Events Fiji director Vineel Nand said this was the one time the people of Nadi came together to farewell 2014 and welcome 2015 in a grand fashion.

“It is sad to see that business houses, taxi operators and bus operators are objecting to a cause which not only markets Nadi but shows the unity of Fijians,” Mr Nand said.

“This was the very reason why Nadi did not have a street party last year while other major towns and cities had their share of fun.”

He said the inaugural street party in Rakiraki last year was a successful one which drew thousands of people.

“Rakiraki being such a small town had a successful street party together with Labasa and such undermining tactics will only dampen the spirits and the unity of Nadi,” he said.

“It also gives the people an opportunity to socialise. Tourists also become a part of the festivity and enjoy themselves which was evident in the previous street parties.”

Mr Nand said the Market Road had hosted a street party in 2012.
