The Association of the South Pacific Airlines has acknowledged the vital role played by Fiji Airways in the region.

Association general secretary, George Faktaufon, said: “Fiji being the most developed island nation in the Pacific has an advantage with its central location.

“Fiji Airways is a founding member of ASPA and plays a vital role not only in providing leadership in the past but a vital role in regional aviation, providing links to Fiji from many regional airports.

“Fiji is very important not only for aviation but for trade and tourism for the region.”

He made these comments during association’s 61st general session which ended yesterday at the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa on Denarau Island.

Mr Faktaufon said the ASPA body was formed after the failure of the regional airline concept in the form of Air Pacific.

“It was also formed at the recommendation of the Pacific Island Forum Leaders, to encourage the regional airlines to work together to promote commercial aviation in the region,” he said.

“All ASPA conferences held in Fiji are facilitated by the ASPA Secretariat, everywhere else in the Pacific; the national airline assists in making the local arrangements.

“ASPA also facilitates workshops and seminars for the members to address issues of common interest.”

Meanwhile, ASPA was first hosted at the Forum Secretariat, but moved to its current office at the Nadi Airport in 2006.

Since its establishment ASPA is an autonomous regional organisation, having its own board, and is not for profit.
