Person Fined For Breeding Dengue Mosquitoes

The Nasavusavu Rural Local Authority earlier this month fined a person for breeding dengue mosquitoes in discarded tyres.
The accused was fined $100 as a fixed penalty and $25 court costs.
The accused was also found operating a mechanical garage on residential property without permission as required by the Rural Local Authority.
This was despite being issued notice and prior warnings.
This act contravenes the Public Health Act being the preventative measures taken to eliminate the transmission of dengue viruses.
The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Jone Usamate, during the re- launch of the National Dengue Cleanup Campaign, stressed the importance of public engagement in destroying potential dengue mosquito breeding places.
“The need to remind ourselves of being proactive in the fight against dengue is paramount,” Mr Usamate said.
He said early preparation through regular clean-up and removal of potential breeding sites around and within urban areas was essential in preventing future dengue outbreaks.
“We are reminding the public to engage in regular cleaning of their surroundings, removing and discarding any receptacle containing stagnant water.”
