The BLK-sponsored Fiji Men’s Indoor Volleyball team returned home last Friday with a silver medal from 49th ACT Good Neighbour tournament in Canberra, Australia.

Team manager Anasa Qio said finishing runner-up in the tournament was an achievement.

“It was a good exposure for the boys, especially these young players who will be representing Fiji in the next three years,” said Qio.

“These players created history again for volleyball at an international outing. We are looking at a different approach towards the 2015 Pacific Games in PNG.”

Qio said the tournament was tough and featured top clubs and some top players who had been playing in the Canberra League.

Fiji topped its pool after beating Australia Gold and the Sydney Hawks. They went on to beat Australia Blue in the semifinals before losing to Canberra Heats 2-1 (set) in the final.

“It was really tough although some here in Fiji were not comfortable in our participation,” Qio said.

He said the players played well, especially when guided by experienced teammates like Paula Raturawaqa, Waisake Raratabu and Nimilote Lua.

“Through their experience and leadership, they moulded this team and the players were aggressive on the court, especially in a foreign court. Qio said it was sad to see that Suva players did pull out whilst it had representation from Raiwaqa, Raiwai, Kinoya, Nadi, Lautoka.

“The team will take a break in January then continue with the preparation for the 2015 World Cup,” he said.
