Judge Justice Paul Madigan is hopeful harsher penalties will be introduced when dealing with crimes such as human trafficking.

Speaking at the 16th Attorney-General’s Conference yesterday, Justice Madigan said we could not and should not tolerate human trafficking.

“As a judge, all I can do is wait for the legislation to be as harsh and compulsory as it need to be, so that I may apply the law to crush this appalling organised crime,” Justice Madigan said.

“If it needs stricter laws, then let’s enact them. We are a small country but we can at least do our part to keep the traffickers out of our jurisdiction; we can make Fiji a place that tourists would want to come to and a place that agents of organised crimes would want to avoid.”

Justice Madigan said if left to fester, human trafficking would become a problem for all.

“The seriousness of the impact of human trafficking cannot be underestimated. While it is a problem not facing you and your families, it is a huge problem facing others’ rights to freedom of movement and personal liberty.”

Justice Madigan then asked why a room full of lawyers should worry about human trafficking.

“So why does it mean you should worry? If it is allowed to thrive then your country, your life, potentially you, your freedom are all in jeopardy,” he said.

“If we act to protect the freedom of others then we would hope they might act to protect the our freedom. It is a God-given duty for all mankind to care for each other and there is no more care asked of us than to ensure the freedom and human rights of all”..
