Expect changes in the Vodafone Fiji 7s team after the Dubai loss yesterday

These were the words from Vodafone Fiji 7s head coach Ben Ryan as the team heads towards Port Elizabeth for the South Africa Sevens this weekend.
“I’ll make some changes on Thursday for sure. If there’s one thing that is for certain, it’s the outcome of this next leg in South Africa that will determine a definite and significant change in the top four in the series,” Ryan said.

“So it’s a crucial leg where we’ll have to be careful and really come prepared. We all know that Fiji has not won the South Africa leg in quite awhile and that means we have to work harder to remain in the top four.”

Reflecting on the Cup semifinal loss to Australia in Dubai yesterday, Ryan said a lapse in communication cost Fiji the win.

“I think we started brilliantly with the 19-0 lead at halftime. It was when the defence went quiet momentarily that Australia was able to come through and make the most of that gap. We were really unlucky in that extra time.

“Those two crucial moments when the defence went quiet was where we gave the game away to Australia. But, I’m proud of the boys for coming back strongly against New Zealand and it definitely feels good to be the series leader.

“We played 12 games, won 11 and lost only one, but all 12 players remained fit through the tournament despite some sore knees and knuckles and we move on to South Africa with a fit team.

“We’ve learned a good lesson from this tournament and the semifinal and we’ll apply all that in the next tournament.”

Fiji led in the first-half of the Cup semifinal early yesterday morning against Australia 19-0 at halftime.

The Aussies came from behind to take a 24-24 draw at fulltime, and went on to win 29-24 at extra time. The Fijians leave Dubai today for Port Elizabeth. They are the top seed of Pool C in the South Africa Sevens against Scotland, France and Canada.
