Fiji Farm Management Budget Manual Launched

A new strategic direction for the agriculture sector needs to be taken, if it is to make a difference in the livelihood of the people that it serves says Minister for Agriculture Inia Seruiratu.

He made these comments during the launch of the Fiji Farm Management Budget Manual 2014 at the Tokatoka Resort, in Nadi last Friday.

Mr Seruiratu said the manual was an initiative of the ministry among others, as part of Government’s efforts to modernise the agriculture sector and improve our service delivery to all Fijians.

“Let me say that the policy is a mere document, that needs to be put into action through the implementation of programmes and projects that will benefit the ordinary Fijian,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“It is the duty of every Government officer sitting in this room to identify constraints beyond the ordinary farmer’s control that is limiting him/her from reaching full potential.”

Mr Seruiratu said the identification of constraints and potential of different agricultural industries both in crops and livestock should be revealed in farming systems and value chain analysis.

He reminded those at the launch that the agricultural sector used to be the backbone of the country in the past and the biggest contributor of around 20 per cent to the GDP as opposed to around nine per cent now.

He said Fiji had failed to fully adopt this approach since its introduction in the early eighties and this was evident from the lack of understanding and appreciation of farm management principles by extension officials and farmers.
